About Me

Jana Petken is a multi award winning and #1 bestselling historical fiction author.

Hi, thanks so much for stopping by.

I live in, Dénia, a town sitting at the edge of Spain’s eastern coastline.

img014 (1)I joined the (British) Royal Navy at the age of seventeen.  I was a leading Wren Regulator, with the equivalent rank to sergeant in the military police.

After the Navy I went to work for a travel company as an overseas representative and spent seasons in the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, and North Africa.

I spent twelve years as a bodyguard for a Saudi Princess.  I travelled extensively, met a lot of interesting people, and spent a lot of time just waiting for my Princess to get out of bed before long days of clothes shopping and cake eating! This was their life, not one I would have chosen for myself.

Later, I found a new career as a cabin-crew member for British Airways, Worldwide fleet.

img015 (1)Unfortunately, I had an accident on board a flight.  The aircraft, a Boeing 747, was flying at 39,000 feet above Africa when it was caught in clear-air turbulence.  As the plane dropped, my body flew upwards, and only stopped flying when my head hit the ceiling. The way I see it, it could have been worse. I could have gone through the ceiling. As a result of this accident I had to have three major operations on my spinal cord at the neck, and they heralded the end of my wandering days.

My first book, The Guardian of Secrets, was first published in 2013, and it also has a completed screenplay. It’s a #1 bestseller and an international multi award winner. Dark Shadows and Blood Moon: The Mercy Carver Series were both published in 2014 and is an Amazon #1 bestselling series. The Errant Flock  (The Flock Trilogy Book 1) is a multi award winning historical thriller, released in the summer of 2015. Swearing Allegiance,  a WWI family saga, was released in March, 2016. Coming October 2016, The Scattered Flock

I have always believed that with one life to live, one should make the best of a bad situation, whatever that may be, but what I didn’t know when I hung up my uniform for the last time was that writing books would give me the greatest journey of all.

It is nice to meet you. Please take a look around, and leave a comment. If you need any more information. Please come back again

  1. A friend of mine, Simon Kernick, who is also an author of some renown, told me about this book (The Guardian of Secrets) as he knew I was a history buff and enjoyed fictional history books.

He wrote the name of the book down some time ago but forgot about it. I saw him again yesterday and asked me if I had read it yet. I said I hadn’t but promised I would look it up today. This I did and nearly fell off my seat when I saw your picture. I have read the prologue and I am already hooked.

I am so pleased for you that you have become a successful author and I am looking forward to getting my head stuck into this, your first book, over the Christmas break. Will leave some positive feedback no doubt. Great to see you are enjoying your life and hope you carry on doing so.

We must meet up for a drink next time I am over.

  8. Well, just finished, “The Guardian Of Secrets.” For some reason I do not remember studying the Spanish Civil War when in high school. At age 75 I felt deficient as I read your story. So, being as modern a woman as I can be at my age, I Googled it!!! It helped as I continued reading. What a horrible waste of life as are all wars, of course. We were in the Us Air Force but never had to be a part of anything like the depiction of war you wrote about.
I have a question though. How in the world did Carlos ever believe the red headed child was his? What did Marie say to make him believe he was his child?
Your portrait of Joseph Dobbs was excellent. I pray you have never known such a man but you nailed evil to the wall in him!
The use of the ‘f-word’ always distresses me but I understand the why of using it. I am a bit conservative in that matter.
The book was a real ‘page-turner,’ and thank you for that.

    • Hi Lee. Celia had blonde hair. Maria was auburn. I thought that blond/auburn could make red, from the English side of the family. xxx Joseph was really the only person to use the f word. He was not a nice man and it was widely used at the time, not by the upper classes but by men like him. Thanks so much for getting in touch. Please pop back anytime. xxx
